Burchell Reserve demonstrates how seamless integration of stormwater infrastructure can be achieved within open public space. The extensive flood mitigation measures built into the space are critical to the resilience of the surrounding community during extreme storm events and have been implemented without compromise to the accessibility and character of the space.
The collaborative design process between Council, the design team and the contractor has achieved an innovative design solution within a confined, urban space, with the result being an open space that provides community amenity and security against flooding.

Beyond the stormwater functionality, creating a high-quality green space for the surrounding neighbourhood is integral to the success of the project. The fully accessible playspace, public amenities and recreational facilities are set amongst the existing mature trees, providing an ideal setting for casual gatherings with family and friends.

The project was led by landscape architects from both the client and consultant design team, which has allowed a balance to be struck between infrastructure and user experience.

“…the project exemplifies how effective integration of an existing park with mature trees, stormwater treatment and recreational facilities can be achieved with positive outcomes.”
